本片是蘇聯(lián)為紀念二戰(zhàn)中蘇聯(lián)人民反法西斯斗爭偉大勝利所拍攝的一部史詩性多集寬銀幕巨片。全片分為《侵略》、《臺風戰(zhàn)役》兩部，每部上下集共四集。1941年6月，法西斯德國集中了一百九十個師的兵力，以閃電戰(zhàn)術(shù)入侵蘇聯(lián)，蘇聯(lián)因準備不足，在戰(zhàn)爭初期節(jié)節(jié)敗退，德軍直趨莫斯科城下，雙方在莫斯科展開了殊死決戰(zhàn)。該片拍攝歷時兩年，耗資約六百萬盧布，拍攝場面宏大壯觀，約有五千士兵、近一萬名群眾、二百五十名演員、二百零二名攝影師參加。這部場面宏偉的戰(zhàn)爭和導演其他幾部類似的戰(zhàn)爭片一樣，都在前蘇聯(lián)政府的支持下，拍攝的具有很強政治性目的的電影。影片宣揚的正義戰(zhàn)勝侵略今天看來也是正當?shù)模墒且恍┬麄鲊翌I(lǐng)袖的場景明顯是一種政治需要。如果排除掉這些政治因素，但就影片對宏觀戰(zhàn)爭場面的描寫，依然是出色的。
